I have owned the Garmin Nüvi 1690 unit for 9 months, and was so impressed with its performance that I had to write this review.
Before I purchased this item, I read all of the reviews on Amazon, as well as reviews on other sites. One thing that bothered me was the "Advertising" people reported the device had to supplement the cost of the free live traffic updates. This upset me, I don't like advertising forced on me. After 9 months of using this unit, I can tell you that the advertising is non-intrusive. It's typically a `coupon' for a hotel nearby. They hardly ever popup, they go away quickly, and can be dismissed easily. Do not let that feature stop you from buying this unit. It almost stopped me, and I`m glad I decided to buy this unit.

The Garmin Nuvi 255w is a big improvement over the base 200-series, by adding features such as FM traffic updates or MSN Direct content to an entry-level line.
The 255w adds maps for North America and Text-to-Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 100 feet on first court", rather than simply "turn left in 100 feet").
The 255w also has a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you.
As in all of the 200 series the 255w will fit in your pocket of purse. All come with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that make them very convenient for use.
All of the models in the series include JPEG picture viewer, time zones with a world travel clock, currency converter, calculator and much more.

This is a great entry level GPS. I love the wide screen- Don't settle for a smaller one. Text-to-Speech is outstanding. All the accessories work well. Downloading map updates took a bit, but went smooth. You can download different avatars for your maps. Trip features are outstanding including gas cost. (Truth4you)
