I regularly ride in a friend's shiny new 2009 Porsche and I have to say, their GPS sucks by comparison! You'd think a $100k+ sports car would have a killer GPS -- NOT! The maps were sparse, the colors muted, the speech barely audible and the user interface convoluted and unintuitive. Now I know Porsche's primary concern is the car, not the GPS, but for a top dollar luxury product, you'd think their GPS would be equally cutting edge. I honestly prefer my Garmin Nuvi 5000. The difference is stark! Its no wonder Garmin is widely considered to make the best GPS units on the market.

This super-sized navigator combines a big 5.2-inch display with the convenience and flexibility of a portable device and fits a full array of features into a slim, easy to carry package that's just .8 inches thick.

Designed for RV and truck drivers, whose distant windshields can make a small screen hard to see and even harder to reach. In addition to its large, bright display, its features include preloaded maps for all of North America, a photo viewer and MP3 player, and an FM transmitter that lets you hear turn-by-turn voice navigation prompts, MP3s, and audio books through your vehicle's stereo.

It's also compatible with FM traffic alerts or MSN Direct content (receiver and subscription required). Optional plug-in SD cards let you add additional features to enhance your travel experience including language translation and detailed travel guides.

The Garmin Nuvi 255w is a big improvement over the base 200-series, by adding features such as FM traffic updates or MSN Direct content to an entry-level line.

The 255w adds maps for North America and Text-to-Speech, so you get turn by turn spoken directions with the real names of streets (e.g. "turn left in 100 feet on first court", rather than simply "turn left in 100 feet").

The 255w also has a wide 4.3-inch (diagonal) screen that displays 70% more of the road around you.

As in all of the 200 series the 255w will fit in your pocket of purse. All come with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that make them very convenient for use.

All of the models in the series include JPEG picture viewer, time zones with a world travel clock, currency converter, calculator and much more.

This is a great entry level GPS. I love the wide screen- Don't settle for a smaller one. Text-to-Speech is outstanding. All the accessories work well. Downloading map updates took a bit, but went smooth. You can download different avatars for your maps. Trip features are outstanding including gas cost. (Truth4you)
